MICHIGAN - Warren will be home to the first company in Macomb County to produce alternative fuel.TPA Inc., will produce biodiesel fuel at a plant that could be operational as early as January. Company owners plan to produce as much as 20 million gallons of the fuel a year.
It's been three years since Macomb County economic development officials began discussions with parties interested in manufacturing alternative fuels. As the price of oil and gas rose, the number of inquiries only increased, but nothing panned out until now.
"We've been trying to get something of this nature into Macomb County," said Andrey Duzyj, a Macomb County commissioner who represents south Warren and worked on the project. "I think it's very important for Macomb County and for the center of auto manufacturing for these kinds of places to come in and have exposure to the auto companies."
TPA received approval for the project from city and county officials this month.
The company plans to take soybeans, grease and other oils and convert them into biodiesel. TPA will sell it to distributors who sell to gas stations.
