Print This Page New Zealand Bio-Fuels Bill Update 2008
NEW ZEALAND - This is a GAIN report on New Zealand biofuels bill update prepared by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).Report Highlights
A parliamentary select committee recommended amendments to the New Zealand Government's Biofuels Bill, partly due to fears that the planned 3.4% sales obligation would force imports of unsustainably produced biofuels, thereby undercutting the bill’s aim of reducing emissions. Under the draft bill, oil and diesel suppliers would have been required to introduce biofuels at the rate of 0.53% beginning July 1, 2008, rising to 3.4% by 2012. Under changes recommended by a parliamentary select committee, the scheme will now start on October 1, 2008 and the obligation levels will reach 2.5% by 2012.
