Maui to Get Algae-Biodiesel Facility

HAWAII - Four companies have merged to come up with a micro-algae facility in Maui for the production of oil to be converted to biodiesel, animal feed and other products.

According to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, HR BioPetroleum will be responsible for overall management of the project. Alexander & Baldwin Inc. will provides land next to Maui Electric Co.’s Maalaea power plant.

Maui Electric and Hawaiian Electric Co. will focus on piping to carry carbon dioxide from the plant to the adjacent facility for the algae to consume.

If all goes well, the companies say the first phase of the facility could be in operation by 2011.
