Future of Biofuels

US - A North Dakota State University agricultural economist outlined the biofuel opportunities in North Dakota at the Field Day at the North Central Research Extension Center.

Although the day was set up primarily for topics about cereal grains, Cole Gustafson stole the show with his presentation on biofuel opportunities in North Dakota, according to a report in the Minot Daily News.

The report says that Gustafson outlined some interesting new developments in the manufacture of biofuels such as tests that have been going on to determine how effective field peas can be as a source of ethanol.

Thus far, he said replacing as much as 10 per cent of the corn seems to be the most efficient and the field peas actually speed up the fermentation process.

Switchgrass is the other promising element for the future of ethanol production, according to Gustafson.

"The goal here is to add value and not just be a market commodity," Gustafson said of North Dakota farming.

"This is the future of biofuels as I see it."
