Philippines Biodiesel Demand Expected to Double
PHILIPPINES - The use of coconut oil could nearly double the Philippines production of biodieselAccording to the Manila Bulletin, the scheduled implementation of higher two percent coco methyl ester (CME) blend in February 2009 will increase the country’s biodiesel requirements to about 112-114 million litres from 55-60 million range currently.
"For B2 (2.0-percent blend), biodiesel requirement will be double to around 112 to 114 million litres by 2009," according to Asian Institute of Petroleum Studies Inc (AIPSI) managing director Rafael Diaz in a report in the Manilla Bulletin.
Yet even with the anticipated higher demand of coconut as feedstock for CME, Diaz said this will not jeopardize the food chain because it only accounts for a small portion of total production.
"From coco-oil production of 1.4 billion liters per year more or less, the biodiesel component will translate to just 4 to 5 percent for B1 and 8 to 10 percent for B2," he said.
He stressed the CME feedstock for both B1 and B2 blends are still "less than 10 percent of total coconut oil production."
Presenting such figures, he averred that the biodiesel industry must not be blamed for "the steep rise in coco oil prices."
