Forestry minister visits Indonesia project site
INDONESIA - Indonesia’s Minister for Forestry, M.S. Kaban, visited carbonpositive’s nursery and proposed planting sites in the Nusa Tenggara region in late November 2007.
The company has applied for licences to grow trees at a number of sites on Sumba and Sumbawa Islands, and in West Timor. There is also potential for expansion to bio-energy crops in these areas.
Minister Kaban’s visit included a meeting with local villagers at Oi Saro on Sumbawa and an inspection of our nursery where tree seedlings are being grown. The villagers were happy to see the minister in their region and keen to know when our project would go ahead.

carbonpositive proposes to grow a variety of tree species, and later Jatropha crops, to develop sustainable timber and biodiesel production industries in the region. The company is currently awaiting the granting of forestry licences from the Indonesian government.
The minister, visiting on the eve of the UN climate conference in Bali in which he is heavily involved, expressed satisfaction with what he saw in carbonpositive’s initial project work to date. He acknowledged the social and environmental benefits of the proposed project, saying it was the type of project he wanted to see brought forward by the Bali summit.
The minister also recently launched a scheme to plant 79 million trees across Indonesia as part of a worldwide initiative to counter the effects of deforestation.
