Madhya Pradesh Turns toJatropha

INDIA - Plans to lease out waste land in India could turn the Chambal valley in Madhya Pradesh into a future source of energy.

The Madhya Pradesh government plans to turn the region into a centre for the cultivation of jatropha.

According to The Economic Times, since the regional government has managed to rid the area of some of its worst criminal elements, private companies have shown an interest in cultivating jatropha in the Chambal valley.

R P S Rathore, director, Annapurna ITM bio-energy has proposed an investment of Rs 450 crore in jatropha cultivation and production of bio-diesel in the Chambal areaand the company recently signed an MoU with the state government.

"We would like to convert Chambal into a hub of renewable energy. The state government will first lease out 2,000 hectares of land, but we will need 25,000 hectares later. Our idea is to create facilities in Chambal for the production of solar and wind energy, and cultivation of jatropha plants for bio-fuels," he told the Economic Times.
