Biomass Plant Planned for Tallahasse
US - A biomass gas power plant planned for Tallahassee could use by-products from the Buckeye Florida pulp mill in Taylor County as source material.Biomass Gas & Electric is proposing to convert wood chips into gas to produce electricity.
Information submitted last week to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection shows that the plant could use Buckeye's wood by-products in addition to wood chips and sawdust. But a Buckeye Florida spokeswoman says no deal has been reached, according to a report in the Tallahassee.
Biomass Gas & Electric has also says it will not use Tallahassee's yard trimmings so it can prevent critics from calling the plant a municipal waste incinerator.
CEO and President Glenn Farris told Tallahsse.com that yard trimmings are defined by the state as municipal waste.
Using the yard trimmings "gives the opposition some ability to get into a frenzy that we are a municipal solid waste incinerator," Farris said.
The 40-megawatt plant, which would produce enough power for 24,000 homes, would be located on 22 acres of Florida State University land off Roberts Avenue near Innovation Park.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has 30 days to determine whether the BG&E application is complete, a department spokeswoman said. BG&E is under a contract with the city to get the state permit by December and produce power by June 2010.
