UK Extend Biodiesel Quality Protocol
UK - WRAP and The Environment Agency have made amendments to the draft Quality Protocol regarding the production and use of biodiesel products created from waste vegetable oil.According to Recycle.co.uk, the amendments to the document, originally introduced in October 2007, will re-define the stage at which the biodiesel is no longer considered to be a waste product, therefore changing its classification and requirement to adhere to standard waste regulations. The amendments are expected to encourage oil recycling efforts in the UK.
The decision to amend the protocol follows a three month public consultation in which participants suggested that fuel produced from animal-derived fats and oils be taken into consideration. Regulators previously believed that infectious agents known as protein prions burnt combustion and could cause people to contract vCJD, the human form of BSE. The industry, however, did not express concern over potential health risks, and the Defra Animal Health policy confirmed their beliefs, saying there was “no evidence of greater risk to the environment and human health from biodiesel derived from waste food oil (vegetable or animal oils) or tallow in comparison to biodiesel from virgin oil.”
The 12 week consultation feedback report stated: “Following consideration of the valuable consultation comments received, the scope of the Quality Protocol has been changed.
“This change has been reflected in the revised title of the document with the acceptable input waste materials having been extended from waste vegetable oil to waste cooking oil of either vegetable or animal origin and rendered animal fat (tallow). This follows extensive consultation with Defra Animal Health Policy,” it added.
