Biofuel Industry Will be 'Cornerstone of the New Georgia'
US - Folks who harvest pine trees aren't used to judging their product by how much energy it produces.According to Macon, ethanol manufacturers aren't used to being questioned about their effect on grocery prices.
But at the Southeast Bioenergy Conference that began Tuesday in Tifton, the theme of the day seemed both a challenge and a warning: If you want to get into this hot new industry, you need to rethink how you do business, reports Macon.
The news agency says that the third annual conference gathered more people, bigger players and more participants from other countries at a time when record oil prices and renewable fuel mandates have driven investors into the field. The gathering at the University of Georgia's Tifton campus conference center concludes Thursday.
"If you do anything in your own heart today, promise me this won't be a fad," Gov. Sonny Perdue implored participants. "I'm confident the bioenergy industry and sector is going to be a cornerstone of the new Georgia."
He said $700 million has been invested in Georgia biofuel projects during the last three years.
