Tanzania Draws up Biofuel Guidelines
TANZANIA - Tanzania will draw up guidelines by the end of the year for investment in biofuel production to ensure that food growers aren't displaced by fuel crops and that no harm is done to the environment, the Energy Ministry said.
The regulations will be a stop-gap measure while the government works on a more rigorous national biofuels policy due for completion by the second-half of 2010, Paul Kiwele, acting commissioner for renewable energy, said today in an interview in Dar es Salaam.
"The sector right now is not well-coordinated so we are making an interim arrangement until we develop laws and policies," said Kiwele.
Tanzania has been criticized by lawmakers and environmental groups for awarding licenses for production of biofuels without regulating the industry or doing assessments on the possible consequences, writes Sarah McGregor of Bloomberg.com. One of the concerns is possible competition for space and water between energy and food crops.
