NCSU Gets Grant for GM Ethanol Trees

US - North Carolina State University is getting a $1 million federal grant to study the feasibility of growing genetically-modified trees to produce ethanol.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole and an official of the U.S. Department of Agriculture are scheduled to announce the three-year program on Thursday. Dole and John Cooper, state director of rural development for the Agriculture Department, plan to speak at 3 p.m at the Park Alumni Center on Centennial Campus.

Dr. Hasan Jameel, professor of wood and paper science, is the principal investigator for the grant.

The federal government and private companies are increasingly interested in the development of biofuels such as ethanol as alternative forms of energy.
