Biomass in Ireland: a €500m Deal
IRELAND - Mayo Power, which plans to build a 100-megawatt mixed-fuel power plant near Killala, has signed a deal, understood to be worth between €400m and €500m, to procure biomass for the plant over 15 years.According to the Independent, the company, headed by businessman and former Fine Gael TD and senator Myles Staunton, has entered a contract with Green Belt, a private forestry company to secure wood-based biomass materials.
The proposed plant on the former Asahi chemical site near Killala will cost €140m to build and is expected to use up 500,000 tonnes of biomass materials a year. It will also be run on locally sourced peat, reports the Independent.
Mayo Power is owned jointly by Mr Staunton and a US-UK consortium, Rockland Mayo Holdings, led by Irish-American Gerald Crotty. The promoters expect the plant to provide enough power to supply all the electricity needs for Co Mayo and stabilise the transmission system in the area -- one of the weakest on the Irish grid.
