Green Fuels Group Calls for Sugar Cane
US - The Louisiana Green Fuels Group is to build a plant capable of producing 25 million gallons of ethanol annually at the St. James Sugar Mill, which it bought two years ago.LGFG is lobbying local farmers to deliver a portion of their 2008 sugar cane crop to be milled at the facility, according to reports in the Advocate.
The sugar cane farmers, who will deliver all or a portion of their crop received bonus checks, according to a news release from LGFG, a Louisiana company producing advanced biofuels from sucrose crops.
The report says that St. James Parish President Dale Hymel, Jr., said: "I think there is excitement with the farmers,” he said in the news release. “I know the ones I have talked to feel it’s a good thing. Competition is always a good thing, and they view this as an option or alternative that they can rely on or call upon for their crop."
He added that the mill has received approval to grind sugar cane in 2008 and the company is urging area farmers to begin growing sweet sorghum cane, which looks much like corn without the ears and is rich in fermentative sugar, which is a desirable for producing ethanol.
Wilbert Waguespack, president of South Louisiana Sugars Co-op Inc. and a former owner of the St James factory, backed the LGFG allocation.
Roddy Hulett, chief operations officer for LGFG, said bringing the St. James mill back into operation will serve to support and enhance the market for Louisiana sugar cane farmers.
