EU Set for Biofuel Sustainability Deal
EU - The European Union is expected to hammer out a deal on biofuels' sustainability this week as part of the attempt to increase the biofuel use in transport to 10 per cent by 2020.The French presidency of the EU, which according to reports in Europe believes there are strong convergences between the nations, is expected to work out a deal with the EU 27 on Wednesday.
The deal is expected to be in two parts with biofuels showing CO2 savings of about 35 per cent would count towards the 10 per cent transport fuel use.
According to a report in EurActiv the figure would be scaled up to 50 per cent CO2 saving from 2017 and the approach would be reviewed before this in 2014.
The deal could also spell out benefits for producers growing biofuel crops on poor land, with relaxation in the CO2 equation.
EurActiv says that sources say the agreement would also require biofuel production to respect binding environmental criteria as regards the protection of biodiversity and areas with high carbon stocks, such as wetland or forest areas.
The European Commission is expected to report every two years on the indirect effects of biofuels in terms of land use and food prices, and could take action against those, who are not in line.
