Clubroot of Canola on the Rise in Alberta

CANADA - Clubroot has been discovered on canola crops in municipalities and in areas where it had not previously been found in Alberta and the disease has spread to additional fields in some municipalities where clubroot had already been identified.

Clubroot of canola was named a pest under the Agriculture Pest Act (APA) in April 2007.

This designation under the Act gives pest inspectors the authority to inspect fields that may contain clubroot. If producers notice strangers in their fields, it is very possible that it will be inspectors. These inspectors will be more than willing to tell producers what they are doing and show their pest inspector identification.

"It is highly recommend that anyone entering a possibly infected field disinfect their boots after leaving," says Allan Macaulay, pest management regulatory officer, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Edmonton. "Pest inspectors will certainly follow this procedure, or will wear disposable covers over their boots."

Clubroot is most commonly spread by machinery carrying soil from an infected site. Producers who know they have a field with clubroot are asked to make sure they disinfect any and all machinery when leaving the infested field so that clubroot isn't spread to other fields.

"Many municipalities will be asking land owners that have clubroot in a field not to grow canola in that field for the next three to five years," says Macaulay. "Under the APA, municipalities can take whatever steps are reasonable to contain the disease. In many cases, the municipalities will issue notices telling landowners and renters not to grow canola for a certain number of years, and that canola seeded on these lands before that time will be worked under."
