Sustainability: the Urban Imperative
SWITZERLAND - The battle for sustainability must be won in the cities, suburbs and slums as much as in the forests, lakes and seas, WWF Director General James Leape will tell a key “One Planet Business” conference in Geneva on September 30.“Today humanity is using 30 per cent more resources annually than the earth is able to renew,” Mr Leape will say. “With the urban population expected to double to 6.4 billion between now and the year 2050, we must find ways in which to provide housing, food and transport that do not provoke a complete collapse of the ecosystems that make our lives possible.”
The Sustainable cities conference, organized by WWF International’s One Planet Business initiative and Green Power Conferences, will take place from September 30 to 1st October at the President Wilson Hotel in Geneva, Switzerland.
Managing Director of Green Power Conferences, Nadim Chaudhry, said the conference was a major opportunity for networking with experts and for companies to develop their capacity for innovation in the field of sustainability.
“This important global meeting is the latest in Green Power Conference’s growing portfolio of market-leading events in the sustainability sector,” Mr Chaudhry said. “This partnership event with WWF will tackle vital global issues and help companies and local authorities meet the growing demand from their stakeholders for high-quality and sustainable products and services.”
Mr Leape will be joined by Stefan Behling of Foster and Partners and Malcolm Smith from Arup, the company developing the Dongtan eco-city in China. Other speakers include Professor Peter Droege from the Urban Climate Change Network, Dr. Jonathan Woetzel from McKinsey and Co., and Pierre Laconte, President of the International Society of City and Regional Planners.
