Call for Grants for Solar Power
INDIA - Small industries in Vellore have called on the local government for grants to install solar generation systems in a bid to cut fuel costs. The Vellore District Small & Tiny Industries Association (VEDSTIA) has asked the Tamil Nadu government to arrange 80 per cent grants by the Central and State governments for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
In a memorandum submitted to Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswamy at a meeting of small industries associations held at the Secretariat in Chennai last week, the VEDSTIA suggested that the SMEs could be assisted to install solar power generation systems to a capacity of one MW and that the government could arrange for the necessary technology to the SMEs, according to a report in The Hindu.
VEDSTIA said that if they could get an 80 per cnet grant, then they could raise the rest of the money through bank loans.
R. Amirthakatesan, president of VEDSTIA, told The Hindu that the association had also urged the government to extend to low tension consumers the permission for generating power from wind mills (now available for high tension consumers) and concession of supply of power by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) at the same rate at which the HT consumers sell windmill-generated power to the TNEB.
The association said that all major industries could be forced to install a captive power generation facility and to use captive power alone without seeking TNEB power.
