Biomass Plant for Springfield
US - City Councillors in Springfield Massachusetts have given the go-ahead for a new biomass plant for the community. The wood chip burning plant, proposed by asphalt company Palmer Paving under its subsidiary Palmer Renewable Energy, is planned for an industrial site in Springfield.
David Callaghan from Palmer Renewable Energy told CBS3 Springfield that if approved, Springfield would have the first chipped-wood biomass plant in the state.
The plan proposes that trucks from all over would stop in the city and dispose their wood at the plant. That would translate into energy which would serve the entire state. The energy would be sold on the grid.
"It's a good project to solve the waste problem in all of Massachusetts," Mr Callahan told CBS3 Springfield.
The final stamp of approval now has to come from the DEP and if given the full go-ahead work is expected to start next year.
