Italians Seek Biodiesel from Seaweed
ITALY - Eight Italian biodiesel producers are to change production from food crops to seaweed in an effort to lessen competition with crop cultivation. The $14 million plan sets out to grow the seaweed in plastic tubes of sea water that will be fed with carbon dioxide captured from thermal power stations in a project called Mambo haeded by Italy's Union of Biodiesel Producers.
A plant may be built on the coast in southern Italy in two years and the producers expect to have established the process in two years. The plant should be producing diesel within five years.
The scheme is motivated by desire to move away from cereals and biodiesel producers are increasingly looking elsewhere to reduce the criticisms surrounding increasing prices for food.
The Italian group is hoping to take the lead on second-generation biofuels, using non-food plants and waste products.
Some the economic drivers behind the project are that food oils have gained in currency and European Union has instituted rules requiring transport fuel to contain an increasing proportion of biofuel.
