Kinross Ethanol Plant to Go Ahead

US - Mascoma, a leader in low-carbon biofuels technology, is to go ahead with plans for a cellulosic ethanol plant in Kinross, Michigan..

State Representative Gary McDowell announced that the company had settled on Kinross as the site of one of the nation's first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plants, which he claims will create between 500 and 700 jobs in the EUP and invest $450 million in the community.

Earlier this year Rep. McDowell said: "I have always said that Michigan has the potential to become a powerhouse in renewable energy production, and Mascoma's decision to invest in the Upper Peninsula will turn that potential into real results.

"Mascoma's cellulosic ethanol plant will create good-paying jobs for our workers, help reduce our dependence on foreign oil and produce clean, affordable energy. This is a very exciting announcement for our community and our state."

Following initial plans for the project, the Kinross Township Board eased the way for the plan in July by passing a Renewable Energy Renaissance Zone, establishing a 15-year tax abetement zone for Mascoma, according to SooEveningNews.

The plant is expected to be in full production by 2010 and produce 40 millions gallons of wood-based ethanol a year.

It is estimated to create 50 direct jobs and 150 construction jobs, plus hundreds of spin-off jobs in forest harvesting and transportation. Mascoma had been considering two sites in Chippewa County, ultimately settling on the Kinross site.

Mascoma will receive $20 million to help build the plant as one of the state's first Centers of Energy Excellence.
