Conference to Address Energy Issues
KENYA - A National Energy Conference is being held this week at the Kenyatta International Conference in Nairobi to address several challenges facing the energy sector such as over-reliance on hydropower, the high cost of rural electrification, frequent power outages and high systems loss and the high and ever rising prices of imported fossil fuels. The Minister for Energy Kiraitu Murungi said the conference aims to provide an insight into pricing impacting development of competitive energy markets, a comprehensive analysis of the existing and emerging opportunities, problems and prospects of alternative energy sources, an in-depth assessment of policy, legal and institutional framework for renewable energy, downstream petroleum sub-sector and electricity.
Other areas of interest, Mr. Murung added, would include a debate on nuclear power as an option for transforming the Kenyan energy sector and economy, a review of investment opportunities and incentives in modern energy business and financing options and an opportunity for the interaction and networking with the key players in the Kenyan and International markets.
"It is against this backdrop that the Ministry has organised this conference to discuss policy options and business models for increasing the share of contribution of renewable sources in the energy portfolio; securing petroleum and coal supply options; and strengthening power generation, transmission and distribution," he said.
The conference runs from 7-9 October.
