Bid to Boost Jatropha Planting

ZIMBABWE - The National Oil Company of Zimbabwe (Noczim) has called for contracts with farmers interested in growing jatropha this year to boost the production of biodiesel.

Noczim has said it will provide farmers with jatropha cuttings to establish short-term yielding plantations from September to November 2008.

All farmers with the capacity of preparing at least five hectares of land are eligible to apply for the programme, according to a report on All Africa.

"The National Oil Company of Zimbabwe is running a jatropha cuttings planting programme to establish short-term yielding plantations from September to November 2008," says a statement from the company.

"Under the programme, farmers will be assisted to set up these plantations.

"Noczim is seeking to contract farmers to grow these cuttings on their land. We will facilitate the provision of cuttings. The interested farmers are expected to prepare at least five hectares of land as a minimum requirement."
