Print This Page Wind Power Sets Sail for Antarctica
ANTARCTICA - New Zealand company Meridian is to ship giant wind trubines to provide a power supply in Antarctica.
The wind farm at New Zealand's Scott Base and the American Antarctic station will be the most southerly in the world.
Millions of dollars worth of wind farm equipment is being shipped from Lyttelton Harbour in New Zealand for the Antarctic bases.
"You're talking about windspeeds up around the 200 kilometre mark. Their temperature range down there ranges from minus 57 degrees to a warm five degrees," says Scott Bennett from Meridian Energy told TVNZ.
The turbines will be built on a hill near Scott Base later this year and will replace fuel powered generatorsat Scott Base and the neighbouring US station, McMurdo.
The wind farm will save 500,000 litres of fuel a year according to the TVNZ report.
