Singapore builds alternative energy research centre

SINGAPORE - Singapore is investing S$38.5 million (US$26.7 million) to build a research centre to develop energy systems using alternative sources like solar, wind and fuel cell technology.

The centre will also research on how alternative energy could supply a power grid.

The headquarters for the Singapore Initiative in New Energy Technologies (SINERGY) Centre will be located at the Fusionopolis in Buona Vista and the Jurong Island. The centre is expected to be fully operational by 2009.

SINERGY will focus on the collection and distribution of energy from alternative sources including fuel cells, bioenergy and the next generation of solar panels called solar PV (photovoltaic).

Solar PV uses a low cost alternative to silicon, so it can be used for appliances like consumer products needing power or bigger applications. Some S$8 million (US$5.5 million) in grants will be awarded to 10 projects over the next three years.
