First Biogas Plant For Cornwall
UK - Although planning permission and finance have yet to be finalised, it looks likely that pig producers EH & B Dymond & Son will be the first EnviTec biogas plant in the UK.The cornish farming company, at Penare Farm, Higher Fraddon, near Truro, has commissioned an 844 kW plant. It will process pig slurry from its 600-sow farrow-to-finish unit along with organic and food waste from local food processong firms. Using maize, from the Dymond's 600-acre arable enterprise aslong with Glycerol, a the by-product of bio-diesel production, is also being considered as 'fuel' for the plant
The project, which is currently undergoing an Environmental Impact Assessment, will be managed by a new enteprise, Fraddon Biopower Ltd and will cost in the region of £2,000,000.
The electricity generated from the plant will be eligible for a supplementary Government payment of about 4p per kWh and known as a single ROC (Renewables Obligation Certificate). However, legislative changes mean that this 'green' electricity is likely to be eligible for double ROC from April, 2008, giving it significant profit potential.
Plans are also in the pipeline for another processing plant. This will separate solids from the liquid residue to produce water and a concentrated bio-fertiliser, so reducing the need for transportation of waste.
A further development of 28 'eco-homes' is likely all will have green roofs, solar panels and will benefit from the heat produced from the biogas plant, via piped hot water.
