Biomass plant impresses White

IRELAND - Green Party Deputy Leader and Enterprise and Trade spokesperson, Mary White has urged local authorities to investigate the renewable energy possibilities for their local areas based on a green energy town in Austria.

After a two day trip to Gussing to see biomass, district heating and biogas plants, I have no doubt that a similar model can be replicated in Ireland to create sustainable jobs and provide heat and electricity to homes all over Ireland,' Deputy White said.

In an era of peak oil and climate change, a series of biogas plants throughout Ireland could support the agricultural sector and provide heat and valuable by-products to thousands of Irish homes.

The use of local resources is directly related to the creation of valued economic development. By using local resources local authorities could become energy independent and move away from fossil fuels,' she said.

Deputy White said the Austrian example of a biogas plant, which costs in the region of €2.4 million to build, could be replicated throughout Ireland, allowing farmers to dispose of slurries and manures.
