Conflict Caused by State Pig Farm Project
SHAH ALAM - Was the proposed RM100 million pig farm in Sepang approved by the previous state government? According to Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, it was, but his predecessor, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo has made claims that it was only discussed."No instructions or approval were given for the project, although discussions were held by the state exco on Jan 30," said Dr Khir. He said he opposed the project because it was too large and there were objections from the community.
He added that the previous government's policy was to allow no more than 250,000 animals to be bred, to cater to the needs of the people of Selangor.
"We oppose breeding for export or for sale in other states."
Khalid said the state government was merely carrying out a project that had been approved by the previous government.
"We feel the project should be carried out because the location site is the main pig-breeding area in the state," he said.
The project will comply with the highest standards set by the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry as well as the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry and the state government.
All waste from the project facility will be recycled into biogas to generate electricity, water for the facility and compost to grow feed for the pigs.
"There will be no discharge of waste from the facility," he said.
At the same time, no new pig farms will be approved in the state, and all existing farms will be required to move to the vicinity of the project.
He said the state government would solve all problems related to the project, and treat the concerns of all races fairly.
Khalid said incentives would be provided to pig farmers to move their operations to the site.
"They will be given the opportunity to invest in the project, and their current farms can be used for other agricultural purposes."
The project is estimated to take between six months and a year to implement.
