Uganda to Embark Upon Biogas Project
According to The New Vision, the Government of Uganda plans to launch a large-scale biogas initiative countrywide in order to reduce the use of firewood and charcoal for cooking and lighting.Daudi Migereko, the energy minister, said the initiative aims at improving the health and living conditions, soil fertility and agricultural production, reducing green house gas emissions and creating new jobs through the development of a robust biogas sector.
At a stakeholders workshop for the formulation of a national biogas programme, the minister said the programme aims at installing 20,000 quality biogas plants by 2010.
Migereko said the programme should consider establishing biogas digesters at several schools countrywide so that more people can easily adopt it without fearing.
“Biogas is crucial in addressing the Millennium Development Goals for example, eradicating extreme poverty and hunger,” he said.
