Renewable Energy Group is RFS2 Ready

US — Renewable Energy Group officials have welcome the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) final rule to implement the expanded Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2) which includes a national volume requirement for biodiesel.

"The implementation of final RFS2 rules is a long-awaited victory for our clean biodiesel energy industry and our nation’s energy independence,” said Renewable Energy Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Stroburg. “In addition, we urge our leaders to extend the biodiesel blenders tax credit to ensure short-term success of this clean energy industry and help keep our clean energy workers, working.”

Under the RFS2 final rule released yesterday, biodiesel’s greenhouse gas emission improvement threshold makes the fuel eligible in two categories, biomass-based diesel and advanced biofuels. The rule calls for combined 2009 and 2010 volume requirements of 1.15 billion gallons of biodiesel to be utilized by the end of compliance year 2010.

“As a leading biodiesel manufacturer and marketer, we look forward to continuing our work with the petroleum industry to assist them in executing their biodiesel integration plans to meet volume requirements,” said Renewable Energy Group’s Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Gary Haer.

As anticipated, biomass-based diesel will earn 1.5 RINS. Haer stated that in anticipation of the final rule, REG has been a registered RINS producer with the EPA since early 2009.

As a multiple feedstock biodiesel producer, REG applauds EPA’s re-consideration and utilization of updated science-based models for crop yields and indirect land use calculations, as well as values for co-products like glycerin.

“REG markets both glycerin and fatty acid as co-products of biodiesel production,” said REG Vice President, Supply Chain, Dave Elsenbast. “We are proud to have worked in close coordination with industry partners to supply accurate production and value data for comments to the EPA which led to an updated greenhouse gas emission reduction number qualifying all biodiesel feedstock as eligible under the RFS2,“ Elsenbast added.

“It will take our team a few days to dig into the final rules documents and fully understand the implications of the rules,” said REG’s Gary Haer, vice president, sales and marketing.

“Initial evaluation of the rule looks to be extremely positive for the biodiesel industry.”
