Wind Farm and Smart Grid Technology Planned
Minister Choi discussed the Korean government's plan to establish a national smart grid and urged the formation of active global partnerships to disseminate the technology at an early date.
A smart grid is an intelligent electrical power system that incorporates information technology to deliver power more reliably and with less environmental impact.
At the meeting, the Minister explained why Korea is in an ideal position to lead the world in smart grid technology on the basis of its strength in key industries, combined with its excellent infrastructure for electrical power and communications.
International participants expressed particular interest in Korea's pilot project on Jeju Island, where work is under way to develop a smart grid test-bed complex.
The Minister called for the prompt establishment of a working group on smart grids, which Korea suggested as part of a Technology Action Plan developed by the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate. Notably, Minister Choi said Korea welcomes the participation of foreign companies in its smart grid pilot project as a first step to the forging of vital global partnerships.
Korea recently released a national plan for the establishment of recharging stations for electric cars, legislation to facilitate the implementation of the smart grid project, and the development of standards for smart grid technologies. The goal is to have a national smart grid in place by 2030.
At the weekend, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE)announced that it is to put forward a road map to build a large scale wind farm in teh shallows of the West Sea by 2012.
A report inn the Korea Times says that the Korea Electric Power Research Institute is looking into the viability of the project.
The plan is for an offshore wind farm with a capacity of 100MW.
The large-sized wind farm is projected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars and the government hopes to attract private finance for the project.
