Biomass Plant Proposal for Paper Mill
Terry McAuliffe has submitted a bid to buy International Paper Co.'s mill outside of Franklin.
According to a report on Hampton Roads, the paper mill is to close this year and a total of 1,100 jobs will go.
McAuliffe, who ran for governor of Virginia but lost the Democratic nomination to state Sen. Creigh Deeds, believes the venture could save hundreds of those jobs, the report says.
"When I heard the plant was going to close, I immediately thought this was a perfect opportunity to create a biomass wood-burning facility," he told Hampton Roads.
International Paper has not annouced what it intends to do with the mill after it closes.
Mr McAuliffe, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said he and a group of investors would provide the capital for the project.
