Petrobras to Double Biodiesel Production in Bahia
The plant's production capacity will be enhanced from 108.6 million litres per year to 217.2 million litres, with an investments of R$66 billion.
The start of the building work at the plant was marked by a ceremony on Monday attended by the governor of the State of Bahia, Jaques Wagner, the CEO of Petrobras, José Sergio Gabrielli de Azevedo, and by the CEO of Petrobras Biocombustível, Miguel Rossetto.
Inaugurated in July 2008 with capacity to produce 57 million litres a year, production at the Candeias plant was boosted by 90 per cent in November 2009, to the current 108.6 million litres per year.
The project to increase the plant's capacity, also carried out at the Quixadá (state of Ceará) and Montes Claros (state of Minas Gerais) refineries - involved joint work of Petrobras Biocombustível and Petrobras' Research Center (Cenpes).
In the 2009-2013 business plan preparation phase, Petrobras Biocombustível looked the opportunity to increase production capacity at the plant again, because of the excellent logistics in the region helping on deliveries and distribution.
When the work is finished to double the size of the plant, 185 jobs will be created. The plant currently has a workforce of 122. The work is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter this year.
