Govt to Embark on Major Biogas Campaign

RWANDA - In a bid to improve waste management and environmental protection, the Ministry of Infrastructure is set to promote the biogas programme in all schools and prisons across the country.

The revelation was made on Thursday, 24 June, by the Minister of State in charge of Energy and Water, Collette Ruhamya, during her tour of three secondary schools in Bugesera District where the biogas project is being piloted; Rilima S.S, Apebu and Nyamata High School.

In an interview, Ruhamya said that the project is funded by the Ministry of Infrastructure and World Vision to cut the schools’ fuel and firewood cost.

“The project cost around 84 million francs,” Ms Ruhamya revealed.

She added that after the successful implementation of the project in some prisons and schools, it has become imperative that it be implemented countrywide to have a broader impact.

“Although biogas is an expensive project to start, we can work with various partners to make it a reality in all institutions. The government is also promoting biogas in households through the National Domestic Biogas Project, which is already realizing positive outcomes,” she added.

Pascal Karemera, the Quality Assurance Director and Biogas Project Manager at World Vision, said that the project, which will be completed by September, estimates to reduce the use of firewood by 50 per cent.
