The Government should take action against industries using coconut husk for power generation. Both State and Central governments must extend financial and technical assistance for value addition and marketing coir products. Market development centre is a must to sell their products.
These appeals were made at a state-level meeting of coir manufacturers held here on Sunday.
Biomass power generation using husk is a great setback to coir industries, posing grave threat to over 2.5 lakh coir workers. Using husk in large scale for power generation would create shortage raw materials for coir industries, according to C.M. Kamaraj, president, All India Coir Federation.
Procurement of husk by power generating units would not help farmers much as middlemen only enjoy the profit.
