Print This Page The Cost of Green Power
UK - The search for greener forms of electricity has led to a conflict between energy needs and the impact of power generating systems on the nearby environment. Rob Westall, of the Evening Post, looks at the arguments on both sides of this big debate.
Most people, if asked, would say they support efforts to save the planet. It is clear that something needs to be done, but should we back green power at all costs?
For instance, if wind power is one way of saving the planet, how many of us would gladly welcome a scheme for 400ft noisy turbines to be built in our community?
As well as the blight on communities, there are also fears that such schemes will harm wildlife and ruin some of the nation's most beautiful areas.
The conflict is not confined to wind farms.
Biofuels, which are included in all UK petrol, take up food growing space, push up prices, and also often lead to deforestation.
