Fayetteville to Hold Biodiesel-Promotion Workshop
US - It is now possible for farmers to make their own fuel, reports the FayObserver.A biodiesel workshop is scheduled for May 22 at the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension at 301 E. Mountain Drive. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. The BioNetwork BioAg Center and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke BioFuels are sponsors with the Cooperative Extension.
“Biodiesel can be made by anyone with a little knowledge,” said Ed Hunt, BioNetwork BioAg Center coordinator. “A lot of folks are very interested because the cost of diesel is putting a lot of small farmers and business folks out of business.”
The workshop will include information about the benefits of biodiesel on the environment, for energy security and from an economic standpoint.
Another plus is that farmers’ equipment can last longer and run better with biodiesel, officials say. But farmers may have warranty problems with equipment if they don’t use quality-grade biodiesel.
Students and professors at UNC-Pembroke will explain to farmers how to make biodiesel using waste vegetable oil. The university’s BioFuels Project has been producing biodiesel from vegetable oil since last spring. The oil is donated by local businesses.
Students and professors in the program have met with farmers to help them meet their goals of converting to biofuels.
“Besides the meeting with the farmers, UNCP BioFuels Project is involved with farmers, county and city commissions in the development of a grant proposal with the goal of starting a farmer co-op biodiesel plant in the future,” said Maria Pereira, biotechnology director at the university.
The BioAg Center’s purpose is to coordinate education and training to ensure that the state has a well-trained workforce in bioagriculture technology. The center was developed as part of the state Community College System’s initiative to spur economic growth with biotechnology.
