New Plant for Southern Germany

GERMANY - Work is set to begin next month on the construction of a biogas plant in Southern Germany.

Bielefeld-based Biogas Nord came out top after an invitation to tender made by the municipal utility body of Fellbach, a town near Stuttgart.

The new plant marks the success of the expansion of Biogas Nord's sales operation in Southern Germany earlier this year.

"This order constitutes another stage in our effort to win market share in the south of Germany," said Head of Sales, Andreas Lohner, who joined Biogas Nord in March.

"We see further potential in the south of the country to implement biogas projects, particularly those involving energy suppliers, municipal utilities and investors."

The biogas plant planned for Fellbach will provide electrical output of 490 kW, and will also supply heat, via an energy conduit, to a nearby greenhouse facility.

Two schools and two festival halls will likewise be provided with decentralised heat energy via a micro gas network.

The fermentation substrate will consist mainly of maize silage and whole plant silage from grain (GPS) obtained from the agricultural sector.

The Ministry for the Economy of the German State of Baden-Württemberg is promoting the construction of the biogas plant as part of its bioenergy competition initiative. Building work is already set to begin in June, with completion planned for the end of October.
