Print This Page Workshops Demystify the Growing Biofuels Industry
ALBERTA - The Agricultural Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA) is working with several local producer-led organizations to deliver workshops designed to demystify the burgeoning biofuels industry.Four separate workshops will be held in various locations between June 16 and 20, 2008. Each one-day workshop will include presentations by people already involved in the production of biofuels as well as government and industry representatives. Some of these speakers/topics include:
- Chuck Penner, Informa Economics Inc. – Biofuels: Opportunities and risks for the livestock and feed industries.
- Harald H. Welling, managing director, Kalwa Biogenics Inc. – Renewable energy, primarily wood-biomass energy and its sensible use.
- Dr. Rex Newkirk, director of biofuels and feed, Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) – Nutritional aspects of dried distillers grains (DDG) and canola meal in feed rations, and the production of biodiesel on a farm scale.
- Dr. Kurt Klein, professor of agricultural economics, University of Lethbridge – Opportunities and issues presented by the biofuels frenzy, and the pros and cons for producers.
- Morley Kjargaard, team leader for the BioEnergy commercialization team, Alberta Agriculture and Food – The Government of Alberta’s nine-point bioenergy plan and its impact on producers.
- Dr. Bert Faber, senior staff environmental advisor, Husky Lloydminster Upgrader - The new ethanol plant in Saskatchewan.
“There is a great deal of conflicting information about biofuels and the impact of that industry on agriculture and producers,” said Dee Ann Benard, executive director of ARECA. “As a key source of unbiased information for farmers and ranchers in this province, we wanted to present an opportunity for people to gain a better understanding of what getting involved might mean for their operations, in terms of both risks and benefits.”
