Biodiesel: The Preferred Oil for Drivers

AUSTRALIA - As the price of petrol continues to go up, all hope of a biodiesel boom have been supressed.

While backyard distillers continue to brew biodiesel from oil from the local fish and chip shop, the chances of wide-scale delivery of biodiesel and ethanol are low, reports the HeraldSun.

RACV spokesman David Cumming said while biodiesel and ethanol were available in parts of NSW and Queensland, there was not enough food stock to make the fuel available across Australia.

The biodiesel, which contains 80 per cent oil, is available from the bowser and the station is struggling to cope with demand.

But Mr Cumming said it was likely biodiesel in Australia would be confined to backyard operations in the short term.

"The biggest problem is they cannot get enough food stock to make it," he said.

BP spokesman Chandran Vigneswaran said the company was investing $50 million on research on second-generation biofuels that didn't rely on food crops.
