Biodiesel NZ and Wine Group in Rapeseed Deal
NEW ZEALAND - A land lease deal has been drawn up between Winegrowers of Ara and Biodiesel New Zealand with 760 hectares of flat Waihopai Valley land now destined for oilseed rape and other crops.Damian Martin told The Malborough Express that the minimum three-year lease agreement was "a complementary, sustainable use for this land with the best possible partner".
The lease covers about half of the irrigated flat land on the Ara terrace and is considered to be prime land for grape growing.
"Because we've got a lot of prime grape land and we can't do it all at once. It's complementary," Dr Martin said.
The rapeseed will probably be planted in spring and cover a quarter of the area at a time as Biodiesel NZ rotates other crops on the land.
Under the lease, Winegrowers of Ara will have the option to buy biodiesel produced from the site for use at Ara to fuel their winegrowing operations, The Malborough Express says.
