Sarawak: Power Generation through Biomass
MALAYSIA - Serawak is looking for more action from corporate agencies in the use of biomass to generate electricity. This is known to be more of an environmentally-friendly, as well as cheaper, approach.Minister for Planning and Resource Management Datuk Sri Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the state was blessed with biomass resources from wood and oil palm residues but their potentials had yet to be fully utilised, reports the Borneo Bulletin.
He said this when commissioning the RM36 million Ta Ann Holdings Berhad's biomass power plant at its plywood complex at Sungai Bidut here yesterday.
The plant, using waste supply from its plywood and sawmill processing, is capable of producing 11.4 megatwatts (MW) of electricity.
Ta Ann sawmill and plywood consume about eight MW while the Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO), the state sole power provider, is interested in buying the balance for its local grid.
Awang Tengah said the state government had so far approved five generating licences using biomass as fuel.
"These will definitely increase in the future and the companies can sell their excess power to SESCO," he said.
He said SESCO would need assistance from the federal government to implement and operate these systems.
